Thanks for this article Linda, I think it's really important to explore and communicate around these changes.
This is more of the same narrative of the culture of captilistic decisions around art, and what ends up happening is everyone loses out because people get demotivated to create, because they face the ethical dilemma of do I want to be oppressed, and dehumanised by these tactics, or do I want to leave? It's sad that Medium are making this choice to be able to use any content and edit it, and distribute it, without royalties or reward. What it means to be human is to have a voice, even if it is a crappy voice with shit grammar. It's still a voice. It's the human journey to be bad at something, and then rise through the journey of getting better. I can hear you when you say it's annoying to see all these people complaining, yet, what is your annoyance with them? Why do you need them to be good writers? Is it because you spend most of your time checking their shit grammar?
These new changes are elitist and adhering to the fame model we've seen in the last century too, where everyone clamours to get to the top so they can just survive. Do you think this promotes healthy thought? Healthy society?
I honestly didn't think Medium would go in this direction, I'm not saying i'll leave but it poses a big ethical dilemma. I valued this platform for decentralised journalism.
